Climate Change & Tourism

SNW (on behalf of the Northwest Climate Group), is co-ordinating a groundbreaking study into how the Northwest of England’s tourism industry can realise the opportunities presented by climate change, whilst protecting the environment from a growing number of visitors and direct climate-related impacts.

The project will predominantly focus on issues relating to the Northwest coast and uplands, as well as cross-cutting sectoral themes such as forestry, health and agriculture. The research component of the study is being led by a team from the Centre for Urban and Regional Ecology (CURE) at The University of Manchester, and is funded by DEFRA, Northwest Development Agency, Environment Agency, SNW and Cheshire County Council. The project will be completed in 2006.
